A somatic, music-based approach for anxiety, trauma, and emotional regulation
Using filtered music, SSP helps calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and open the door for deeper healing.
Healing often requires engaging the nervous system, not just the mind.
Many people understand their struggles on a cognitive level, but still feel anxious, disconnected, or on edge in their bodies.
Traditional talk therapy often focuses on thoughts and emotions, but healing also happens through the body — especially through the nervous system. When the body feels unsafe or on alert, it can be hard to engage in therapy, connect with others, or process emotions. The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) helps create the physiological foundation for safety, making deeper therapeutic work more possible.
If you’ve heard about somatic-based therapy but feel hesitant to start, you’re not alone. Body-based approaches can feel unfamiliar or intimidating at first — especially if you’re used to talking your way through things.
That’s where the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) comes in. It’s an evidence-based therapy that uses filtered music to help your body experience more safety from the inside out.
What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a somatic, music-based therapy developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, rooted in Polyvagal Theory. During sessions, you’ll listen to specially filtered music that sends subtle cues of safety to your nervous system.
Here’s how it works: the music stimulates the vagus nerve, shifting your body out of survival mode (fight, flight, or freeze) and into the ventral vagal system—the part of the nervous system associated with safety, connection, and restoration. This is where healing can truly happen.
In simple terms: You listen to music while we check in with you throughout the process. It’s gentle, grounding, and doesn’t require reliving trauma in order to feel change.
Clients who complete the Safe and Sound Protocol often notice feeling calmer and more grounded in daily life. Many experience reduced anxiety, improved emotional regulation, and less sensitivity to sound or overstimulation.
As the nervous system finds balance, it becomes easier to connect with others and navigate life with a greater sense of ease and resilience.
Safe and Sound Protocol may be a good fit if you:
